Leggett on International Women’s Day: March 2012

The Star Page 2012

In war zones worldwide, Peace Direct and its partners are working with women to bring peace to their lives and their communities. In these fragile countries, women can be prime targets of war – or powerful builders of peace. In modern conflict, the nature of war has changed. The village has become the battlefield and 90 per cent of those killed are not soldiers but civilians – many of them women. And increasingly they suffer from the deliberate use of rape as a weapon.

Indirectly, too, women suffer. Fear of attack or kidnap can prevent them from leaving their homes for essential tasks, such as farming their fields or fetching water and food for their families. They are more likely to suffer domestic abuse during conflict, sparked by the trauma experienced by men during fighting. And they are disproportionately affected by the collapse of health and education systems on which their families depend. But women can be drivers of peace as well as victims of war. With men lost to conflict, they become the head of the household, conserver of the community, rebuilder of the economy. They hold together the social fabric and are deeply concerned with building a better future.

Candid. With A Cut Above

Caring for your hair needs to be just like any diet, exercise and lifestyle habits that we practise. The sooner we start to care for our hair, the sooner the hair starts to retain its glorious lustre. We should also know that hormonal shifts—like those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause—can alter the shape and texture of the hair follicle. So, hair care should begin the moment we hit puberty.

Borneo International Marathon: May 2012

She’s Cool, Sporty, Athletic, N etc…

When the Borneo International Marathon (BIM) was organised for the first time in October 2008, the then organiser, Championship Sports Events Sdn Bhd, set out to achieve several main goals. Amongst others, it sought to instill a healthy lifestyle to local Sabahans through sporting activities, promote Sabah as a sports-tourism destination, revive an annual marathon event, which was last held some two decades ago, as well as raise funds for charity.

However, of all those goals above, there was a special focus on the health benefits of sports activities. Obesity in Malaysia is now a major health issue with the number of obese people almost tripling over the last 15 years. By 2010 obese people account for about 14% of the population, and the trend seems to be progressing. Obesity can give rise to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart and kidney problems.

International Marathon (Borneo Sabah)

Malaysians, therefore, face a greater risk of developing these diseases in the future. Furthermore, it has been observed that obesity is also prevalent among young children due to bad eating habit and sedentary lifestyle. A recent report estimates 3 million Malaysians are diabetics, and the trend is said to be alarming.

Yeay…!!!..She Won. Also To Miss Universe 2012. Amen.
